The Most Strategic of Plans

In my six years on the school board in San Carlos we have done some exciting things, but I think all of it pales in comparison to the vision and ideas outlined in our new Strategic Plan which was adopted by the Board last night. Even though this is all “easier said than done,” [...]

Facilities Master Plan Approved

Last night the Board approved the District’s Facilities Master Plan (FMP) — this is the road map for the building and renovation of our facilities over the next decade. The version posted online was not the final one passed — there were a few minor changes in language and organization of “phases” for certain [...]

Big Step in Strategic Planning

Last night’s board meeting was an unusually formatted one — it was a workshop bringing together all of the work done to date on our strategic plan. This has been a process that kicked off in the summer of 2011, and most of last school year was devoted to community meetings as well as [...]

What does “21st Century” Education Mean Anyway?

Today EdSource published a white paper I have been working on for a while called “PURSUING MODERN AND IMPACTFUL PUBLIC POLICY TO RETHINK CALIFORNIA’S K-12 PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY.” It is, in many ways, the summary of all of the issues that we have discussed locally in San Carlos as well as [...]

Hands-On 21st Century Learning

Last night the San Carlos School District held its third and final meeting in a series of community forums scheduled this spring to discuss 21st Century Learning (here are links to information about the first and second meetings). This session was designed to give participants (which included mostly parents and staff) a first-hand look [...]

Can We Make Some Investments?

Last night’s school board meeting was a single topic meeting — a study session on budget. As I wrote last month, the budget roller coaster may be very interesting this year. This is, once again, due to the uncertainty in the state budget. The Governor is proposing a budget that is based [...]

The Most Hopeful of Times?

Over the last few days, I attended the annual CSBA Annual Education Conference, which is the main event for school board members around the state. This year the event was in San Diego (but back in San Francisco for 2012). Like previous CSBA conferences, one of the more frustrating parts is not being [...]

Goals, 4th Graders, and Measure D

Those topics aren’t necessarily related except for the fact that they were the key topics discussed at last night’s board meeting, which was reasonably well attended particularly given it conflicted with Game 2 of the World Series.

Board Goals – although there will still be some wordsmithing on the final presentation, the Board essentially agreed to [...]
