About this site

I am currently a Governing Board Member of the San Carlos School District, elected November 2007 and again in November 2011. I created this site to keep in touch with folks who want to know more about what is happening in the District and what it's like to be a Trustee.

Please note that ANY OPINION EXPRESSED HERE IS PURELY PERSONAL AND DOES NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT OFFICIAL POSITIONS OR POLICY OF THE SAN CARLOS SCHOOL DISTRICT NOR THE OPINION OF ANY OF MY COLLEAGUES ON THE BOARD.

I encourage everyone to visit the District web site as well as attend School Board meetings.

Note that I reserve the right to edit, reject, or delete posts based on spelling, grammar, readability, or my judgment of what is appropriate discourse.

The San Mateo County School Boards Association (SMCSBA) just announced the winners for the 2010 Kent Awards. Applicants must demonstrate their programs promote student success, employ a high degree of creativity, [...]

“Race To The Top” Races Past California

In what can hardly be described as shocking, California was not selected as one of the finalists in the Federal Race To The Top (RTTT) program. 41 states applied to be eligible for this program, which could include awards of potentially hundreds of millions of dollars. However, most education leaders in this state [...]

We Knew It All Along...

Last Fall I posted an entry about our schools’ API scores. As I pointed out then, all of our schools have both excellent and improving scores. I have also stated many times that, by design, our four K-4 elementary schools offer an equally excellent education. Although most parents and District staff understand [...]

Dr. Baker – No Longer the “Interim”

In June I blogged about the hiring of our new Superintendent. At the time, because of the short time frame we had, we assumed we would hire an “interim superintendent” for a single year and then go out for a broader search for a permanent Superintendent. Well, we got lucky and found someone [...]

Charter Schools in San Carlos -- our unique identity

San Carlos is an unusual School District in that 6 of its7 schools (all except Central Middle School) are “charter” schools. I suspect most parents don’t even realize this because, with the exception of the San Carlos Charter Learning Center (CLC), all of the schools appear to be fairly “traditional.” CLC, which was [...]

San Mateo County Office of Education 2009 Annual Report

This week I received a hard copy of the county’s 2009 Annual Report to the Community. If you’re interested in getting a good background on what the County Office of Eduation does, as well as take a look at some interesting statistics about all of the schools in the county, I recommend a reading. [...]

API Scores Remind us of the Big Picture

Yesterday, the California Department of Education released the annual Academic Performance Index (API) report. These are standardized test scores used both for State and Federal targets. The scores are on a 200-1000 scale, with 800 being the State target for every school. As you will see in the report, currently only 58% [...]

Back to School

The beginning of the school year is always filled with a lot of energy — and this year was no exception — energy from the students, the teachers, and the parents. I now have both a middle school student as well as an elementary school student, so it was great to spend some time [...]

STAR Test Results Released

Although standardized test scores are only a part of how we should measure ourselves in the San Carlos School District, it’s certainly worth sending out links to the updated STAR test results that were published last week:

Click here to select from various reports — this report gives an overview of the whole district (you can [...]

New Superintendent Hired

Last night the Board officially approved the contract for a new Superintendent of the San Carlos School District, Dr. Craig Baker. You can read the press release here.

I’m very excited about the decision, and having spent some time with Dr. Baker, I’m confident he will be a great leader for our school district. [...]
